The Tourism and Recreation programme is popular due to the career development prospects it offers its graduates. It also means bearing responsibility for all those who decide to use the services of travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, fitness clubs, or conference organizers, expecting a professional and satisfying experience.
The Tourism and Recreation (Bachelor’s level) programme at Vistula School of Hospitality (formerly Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management) is an ideal choice for those who want to work in a dynamic environment. Communication skills are key here, as are foreign language skills, organizational skills, and entrepreneurship. It is also perfect for those candidates who are creative like to travel to see the world, meet new people, and want to find out how to provide customers with unforgettable experiences.
The aim of the studies is to provide practical knowledge and the skills necessary, within the activities of enterprises in the broadly understood tourism industry. You will also acquire the necessary knowledge in the fields of marketing, law, human resources management, and other areas relevant to work in tourism, hospitality, and recreation. In addition, you will get acquainted with the latest information technologies and issues, within the fields of intercultural relations and human impact on the environment. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME:
The curriculum of the Tourism and Recreation programme at the Bachelor’s level has been designed to best teach you practical knowledge and skills. This means that, in addition to lectures, you can expect many practical sessions. These include seminars, workshops, as well as strategy and simulation games. Our teaching and research faculty is comprised of outstanding experts, known practitioners, and reputable academics. It is thanks to them, that we can offer you an interesting curriculum, tailored to the needs of the tourism market, and you are able to gain invaluable knowledge and practical skills, starting from the very first semester.
You will learn how to plan, organise, and co-ordinate activities in a tourism and recreation company, hotel, restaurant, travel agency, or resort. The curriculum also includes foreign languages courses (B2 level, according to the Common European Framework).
Studying at Vistula School of Hospitality (formerly Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management)t, you will be expected to undergo internships. They will enable you to gain professional experience. The internships take place in the 2nd year, and their duration must be at least three months, i.e. 300 hours – 150 each in the 3rd and 4th semesters.
You will do your internships at our business partners’ organisations, as well as at a number of other companies, whose activities converge with the curriculum and your chosen sub-major, in addition, to enabling you to perform tasks required by your internship syllabus.
It is important to note that the internship can be done in two parts.
The complete syllabus, which includes, among others, the tasks that must be performed during the internship, along with the relevant documents and description of how the tasks were performed, is available in the “Internship” section. Hold on, though, there is more! During your studies, you will be able to participate in training camps for qualified tourism in the “Mazur” tourist resort at Święcajty lake (see the “Summer and Winter camps” section for more information). You will also be able to utilise the competencies you will gain over the course of your studies, by participating in international conferences organised by our Business Tourism Scientific Club “2B”.
FIND OUT WHERE YOU CAN DO INTERNSHIPS FOR YOUR SUB-MAJOR:
Our Hospitality management sub-major is taught, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of the Polish Hotel Industry, which represents more than 120 hotels, including the Orbis Accor Group. This is where you will be able to do your internship and, based on the material gathered, you may write your Bachelor’s thesis.
The business tourism sub-major is taught in collaboration with Meeting Professionals International (MPI), the largest global association of professional meeting organisers. You will hence be able to do your internship in companies which organise major events.
Leisure time tourism
The Polish Chamber of Tourism is a partner of the leisure time tourism sub-major. The Chamber is, in fact, the largest organisation within the Polish tourism industry.
Recreation in tourism
The recreation in tourism sub-major will take you to recreation clubs, fitness centres, and spa & wellness centres belonging to hotels.
The gastronomy manager sub-major offers internships at various restaurants and hotel gastronomic units.

SUB-MAJOR: HOTEL BUSINESS
If you would like to work at a hotel, or operate your own business of this type – this is the sub-major for you. You will gain the required knowledge of hospitality planning and operating hotel facilities, as well as promoting and organising the related services. This is where you will learn the principles governing the hospitality market and facilities, both in Poland and the European Union. After graduation, you will be able to organise tourist and leisure events for hotel guests and promote the so-called ‘active leisure’.

This sub-major is the answer to the needs of the rapidly-developing business tourism sector. By choosing this sub-major, you will learn how to professionally organise business trips, congresses, conferences, incentive tours, and company picnics. You will be able to independently plan business events, such as fairs, study tours, study presses, or corporate events. SUB-MAJOR: RECREATION IN TOURISM
If you would like to work at a sports club, fitness centre, wellness & spa facility of a hotel, or operate your own similar establishment, this sub-major is for you. You will learn how to plan, organise, and co-ordinate sports and recreation activities, and manage sports and recreation events, including risk management. You will know how to communicate with local authorities, how to collaborate with celebrities, and how to manage activities, as part of international festivals.

Prof. Wiesław Alejziak, PhD
Professor, PhD, employed in the Faculty of Tourism and Recreation, Academy of Physical Education in Cracow, Head of the Chair of Tourist Policy. PhD in tourist policy conferred in 1991, habilitation dissertation in the field of the methodology of studying tourist activity as well as its tourist diversification defended in 2010. Both scientific degrees in physical cultural sciences. Studies at the Main School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (economic studies – diploma work entitled ‘Tourism and recreation as an element of the tourist policy of the state’) as well as at Jagiellonian University (postgraduate pedagogical studies). Participation in numerous courses, trainings and specialist workshops in national and foreign institutions. Author of several innovative research methods, including SATT (Sequential Analysis of Tourist Trends), OMPN© (Methodological Imaging of Scientific Works) as well as TelSKART© (Telephone System of Cellular Analysis of Tourist Traffic) which bases on the utilization of the system of cellular phones to examine the size and structure of tourist traffic. Author of over 200 scientific publications on various aspects of tourism as well as author or co-author of eight books and textbooks (several of them with more than one edition), including: ‘Tourism in the face of the 21st century challenges’ (1999) which is one of the most frequently quoted Polish publications in the field of tourism in the whole history of research over this phenomenon (over 330 citations). Bibliometric indicators (acc. to Google Scholar – state for May 2019): Hirsh Index – 13, 1-10 Index (works quoted at least 10 times) – 23.
Prof. Elżbieta Biernacka, PhD
Full professor, specialist in the the field of devastated land use management. Laureate of the Golden Laurel conferred by the Division V of the Polish Academy of Sciences for her outstanding contribution to the development of agricultural sciences; honorary Professor of the University of Warmia and Mazury; member of the Scientific Board of the Institute for Agricultural and Forest Environment of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań.
Krzysztof Celuch, PhD
Speaker, business consultant, and an entrepreneur; he specialises in the meetings industry, event marketing, and event management; his scientific research, training observations, and keynotes, are all built on knowledge in economics, business psychology, sociology, marketing, and cultural studies; he conducts workshops and training sessions, delivers lectures and presider over panel discussions, debates, and management meetings, but also implements research projects, builds strategies and provides business consulting services; assisting organisations, institutions, and companies in the areas of management, communication, motivation and business development, with particular emphasis on the meetings industry (event marketing) is another “string to his bow”.
Bogdan Dębowski, PhD
Geographer, PhD in physical culture sciences, almost 30 years of work in the tourist branch, executive positions in travel agencies, experience as a tourist guide, local guide, hiking and mountain tourism guide of the Polish Society of Tourism and Sightseeing (PTTK). Since 2000 – didactic worker at the School of Tourism and Recreation, ALAMER School of Economics and since 2003 of Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw.
Piotr Dominik, BEng, PhD
Graduate of the Faculty of Food Sciences (Food Technology) at Warsaw University of Life Sciences, PhD in agricultural sciences; completed doctoral studies in the field of food quality assessment, medical analysis and pedagogical studies; he studied at German universities in Trier, Freiburg and Bremen; co-managed a family hotel facility in Germany in 1987-1989; in the years 2005-2006 held the position of the chief specialist for training and education of hotel and catering staff at the Polish Hotels Association; in the years 2011-2013 expert for HORECA at the Institute of Knowledge and Skills; speaker, consultant and trainer in the field of culinary tourism and the use of traditional culinary products cooperating with the Marshal’s Office of Mazovian voivodeship; author of academic textbooks, monographs, chapters in monographs and scientific articles in the field of nutrition, gastronomy and hospitality and culinary tourism; member of the Publishing Council and Editorial Board of Almamer Scientific Books; deputy editor-in-chief of the Problems of Tourism and Recreation magazine published by VSH; a member of the Editorial Board and a thematic editor of the Vistula University Working Papers.
Witold Drogoń, BEng, PhD
Specialist in the field of hotel management, organization and management of hotel facilities and information protection in the enterprise; member of the Polish Hotel Industry Chamber, chairman of the team for domestic events of Polish diaspora of Cooperation with the Polish Community Abroad Commission of Polish Olympic Committeee; he also worked at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, as the manager of the “KLONOWA” Hotel and the residence of the President of the Republic of Poland in the Belvedere; organizer of the nationwide conference “Bezpieczny hotel – oczekiwania i wyzwania wobec EURO 2012” (“Safe hotel – expectations and challenges towards EURO 2012”); author of textbooks for hotel technicians.
Prof. Ewa Barbara Dziedzic, PhD
Education in economics with specialization in the field of tourism-related issues. Author of numerous publications in the field in tourism. Long-time experience in didactic and research work. Participation in pioneering projects in the field of the assessment of the contribution of tourism to the economy of the country and selected regions carried out in Poland.
Izabella Dzierżanowska, PhD
Studies completed at: Faculty of Geography, Warsaw University, doctoral studies in the Institute of Geography and Urban Planning of the Polish Academy of Science, Postgraduate studies at the School of Economics in Cracow. Subjects taught: geography of tourism, local history, tourist regions, socioeconomic geography, demography.
Joanna Kalecińska, PhD
Graduate of the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. She completed specializations in: sailing, tourism and recreation; in the course of studies, she obtained the following licences: instructor in swimming, gymnastics, light athletics, junior Volunteer Water Rescue Organization lifeguard, yacht and motorboat helmsman, PYA instructor. PhD in physical culture sciences conferred in 2008 for a thesis entitled: ‘Sports-practising families as an environment favouring recreational physical activity’. She is graduate of Postgraduate Studies in Education for Life in the Family (2001), Annual Postgraduate Management Studies at the Warsaw School of Economics (2010) as well as MBA in Higher Education Institution Management at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (2016). She completed numerous scientific internships, among others, at: Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education (Kowno, Lithuania) (2010 i 2012), Latvian Academy of Sport Education (Riga, Latvia) (2011), Universitad de Alcala (Madrid, Spain,) (2013), Université du Sud Toulon Var (France) (2014), Presov University. Faculty of Sport (Slovakia) (2015), Funchal University of Madera (Portugal) (2016), Uniwersity in Zadar (Croatia) (2018). Her professional experience is connected with work in the educational system at different stages of education (primary school, middle school, university), on different posts from a teacher of physical education to didactic posts (assistant, assistant professor, lecturer) as well as executive positions (Vice-Dean for Project Management; Vice-Dean for Didactics; Deputy and Director of the Tourist and Recreation Educational Programme; Head of Institute). She authored over 50 scientific publications. She is a member of the Polish Scientific Association for Animation of Recreation and Tourism in Poznań and Vice-President of the Association of Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw graduates.
Michał Ryszard Koskowski, PhD
Lecturer, researcher and consultant specializing in areas common to management sciences, tourism and cultural heritage. Graduate in the field of International Economic and Political Relations and specialty of Tourist Economy at the Warsaw School of Economics (2001), PhD in cultural heritage management in the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies, Newcastle University in Great Britain (2013). Member of the Forum of UNESCO University and Heritage, member of REMIT (Research Group on Economics, Management and Information Technologies) at Universidade Portucalense (Portugal), frequent Erasmus+ programme beneficiary, reviewer for the journals ‘International Journal of Tourism Anthropology’ and ‘Turystyka Kulturowa’, instructor and consultant for cultural heritage management in nongovernmental organizations. Krzysztof Łopaciński, PhD
In the years 1970-1979, an assistant and then senior assistant at the Main School of Planning and Statistics, in the years 1979-1982, deputy director of the Centre for Technical-Organizational Progress PBP ‘Orbis’, in the years 1982-1992, employee of the Institute of Tourism, in the years 1992-2007, director of the Institute of Tourism, in the years 2007-2012, president and then vice-president of the Institute of Tourism Ltd. Co. Since 2005, lecturer at the Main School of Tourism and Recreation (now Main School of Tourism and Hospitality) as well as in W. Pol School of Society and Nature in Lublin. Master’s Degree in mathematics obtained at Warsaw University in 1969 and PhD in economic sciences in the Main School of Planning and Statistics (now Warsaw School of Economics) in 1979. His scientific research activity covers statistical research in tourism, marketing as well as theory and practice of tourist policy. Head of a large number of research projects and author of a number of reports on different aspects of tourist economy. Hobbies – history of academic tourism, trekking tourism and history of tourist songs.
Prof. Adam Mazur, PhD
Professor of the Vistula School of Hospitality. PhD. in humanities; sociologist and expert in humanities having long-term experience in teaching at various levels of education; specialist in implementing educational tourism projects, regional education, implementing the principles of sustainable development, coeducation; he held the positions of: head of general subjects department, head of the hospitality and catering, deputy dean for student affairs and faculty dean. He has been a chairman of the Faculty Commission for Quality of Education and scholarships; he is a member of the faculty curriculum committee and a coordinator of the subject module.
Anna Mazurkiewicz-Pizło, BEng PhD
Studies completed at University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poznań and Postgraduate Studies in Public Relations at Warsaw University. PhD defended at University of Life Sciences in Warsaw. One of the first to undertake research into the wine tourism, completed with a monograph entitled: ‘Enotourism as chance for the socioeconomic development of rural areas’ (2013). Author of approximately 100 publications and chapters in scientific monographs, among others, ‘The use of the Internet in the promotion of tourist enterprises’, ‘Enotourist promotion on the example of the Podkarpacie Region’, ‘Typology of wine tourism consumers’ as well as ‘The importance of non-profit organisations in developing wine tourism in Poland’. Co-author of books on marketing. Reviewer in several scientific journals, among others, ‘Journal of Tourism and Culture Change’ and ‘Current Issues in Tourism’. Member of the Scientific Society for Management and Organization (since 2013), Polish Scientific Society for Marketing (since 2014) and Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (2016-2017). Scientific internships in Norway (Stavanger, Oslo), Slovakia and Poland.
Agnieszka Muszyńska, PhD
Since 1997, Agnieszka has excelled in her profession as a tour leader and subsequently, in 2004, further advanced to specialize in the coordination and tour leading of incentive travel projects. Agnieszka’s vast experience working with agencies and corporate clients has enriched her work as a lecturer at various universities. Her doctoral dissertation (defended at The Collegium of Management and Finance at the Warsaw School of Economics) was highly successful in highlighting the role that incentive travel has in managing employees’ motivation. Agnieszka uses her extensive project and coaching experience to lead workshops and training in the field of MICE product management to get the best results for her clients. It is well regarded that Agnieszka’s knowledge and skills have been essential in supporting MICE agencies with the creation and organization of incentive projects.
Mirosław Nalazek, PhD
Graduate of Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń and Main School of Planning and Statistics (now Warsaw School of Economics) in Warsaw. PhD in economic sciences. Specialization in issues related to the tourist market as a whole and to individual sectors of this market: hotels, travel agencies and transport as well as the influence of information technologies on the tourist market. Author of several books and numerous articles in the field of marketing, management and economics of the tourist market.
Przemysław Płoskonka, PhD
Teacher by education and passion. Author of scientific studies and publications in the field of qualified tourism, outdoor and field education. A competition sportsman for 15 years, he reached the master class in swimming. Experienced organizer and manager of qualified sports events and adventure expeditions. He has numerous instruction, outdoor and tourist licences, including, among others, instructor in survival and line techniques, instructor in canoeing or swimming coach. A Volunteer Water Rescue Organization and a Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society tourism organizer. Long linked with the MICE branch, founder and long-term President of B.P. ESCAPE & EXPLORE CLUB. Co-founder and Vice-President of the Association Polish School of Survival. Outdoor ethics trainer responsible for the implementation of the Leave No Trace project in the territory of Poland. Bronze Cross of Merit for the development of education.
Prof. Teresa Skalska, PhD
Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Recreation of the Vistula School of Hospitality. President of the Association for Research, Development and Promotion of Tourism; author of numerous projects and research papers, among others, in the field of inbound tourism to Poland, the impact of tourism on regional economy, sharing economy, tourism for persons with disabilities, the impact of tourism on the economy of big cities; author of many publications, e.g. from the area of satellite accounts and tourism for persons with disabilities.
Prof. Hanna Zawistowska, PhD
Until 2018, associate professor at the Tourism Department of the Warsaw School of Economics; specialist in the field of tourism law, consumer protection of tourist services and the state’s tourism policy; in the years 1997-2011 she worked in central government administration bodies for tourism, on behalf of which she participated in the work of international organizations (EU, OECD, UNWTO; WTO) and in the work on the implementation of EU regulations on consumer protection of tourist services; head of Postgraduate Studies in Tourism and Hotel Management at the Warsaw School of Economics; author of over a dozen publications devoted to the issues of consumer protection of tourist services, setting up and running a business in tourism and tourism policy; lecturer in subjects from the area of law in tourism, protection of tourist services consumers, state tourism policy, event organization; manager of the project implemented in the years 2014-2015 aimed at developing a sectoral qualifications framework for the tourism sector; from November 2016, the chair of the Sectoral Council for Competences in Tourism.
Prof. Jolanta Żyśko, PhD
Rector and professor of the Vistula School of Hospitality in Warsaw. Since 1990, she has been involved in research and scientific works in the field of sports organisation and management; she completed an academic internship at the Institute of Sport & Leisure Policy of the University in Loughborough; she gave lectures at many foreign universities, including the Deutsche Sporthochschule in Cologne, the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Bayreuth; since 2009, member of the management board of the European Association for Sport Management; she is an expert of the European Commission for management of human resources in sports and of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for the implementation of the National Framework of Qualifications in Higher Education; she is also an expert for education quality of the State Accreditation Committee; she also won several championships of Poland in yacht racing, class 470, and participated in the Goodwill Games of 1986; in 2017, she received a nomination for the Director of the Institute of Sports – PIB (the National Research Institute) for the position of the chair of the Council for Competences of the Sports Sector, and she joined the group of Honorary Ambassadors of Polish Congresses; in 2018, the Minister of Sports and Tourism appointed her the Vice Chairperson of the Council for Education and Development of the Physical Education Staff, and she received the MP POWER AWARD in the category of associations.

Vistula School of Hospitality (formerly Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management) offers no less than two sub-majors, centred around teaching you how to be a great organiser. The programme will show you how to make a fun start, the moment your customers step onto the coach.

Tourism and Recreation graduate qualifications
The graduate of the first degree studies in the field of Tourism and Recreation of Vistula School of Hospitality (formerly Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management) is awarded a Bachelor’s Degree. The first degree studies have a practical education profile. They prepare students for work in tourism, hospitality, catering and recreation enterprises as well as in institutions dealing with broadly understood tourism and recreation. The graduate is also prepared to run his/her own business in this area – in line with the selected specialty of study.
Qualifications of the graduate of the first degree studies in the field of Tourism and Recreation correspond with the sixth level of the Polish Qualification Framework.
The graduate knows and understands the basic economic, social and organizational
determinants of phenomena related to tourism and recreation as well as selected specific issues in the sectors of tourism and recreation (hospitality industry, catering, organization and services associated with tourism, leisure time animation, business tourism as well as meeting organization).
The graduate understands the relationships that take place in the tourist economy, i.e. the
local, national and international conditionings of professional activity in tourism and recreation as well as the most important development trends in that area.
The graduate knows the general principles of creating and developing forms of individual
entrepreneurship, taking into account the specifics of tourism and recreation. He/she has the basic knowledge necessary to run his/her own business in the area of tourist, hospitality, catering and recreation industries.
The graduate is able to use his/her knowledge to solve problems related to the work
activities in tourism and recreation, monitor changes in the socio-economic environment and take them into account when planning long-term activities on the market.
The graduate has managerial, organizational and marketing skills, is able to analyze the
tourist market and recognize consumer needs and preferences, as well as to develop an effective strategy for the operation of entities in the tourism sector. He/she can think creatively using the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge, moreover, he/she can adapt to changing conditions.
The graduate can make quick decisions and solve work related problems.
The graduate can make an effective use of modern methods and technologies, procedures
and tools in his/her professional activities, including information and communication techniques.
The graduate shows a high degree of creativity and is willing to continue updating his/her
skills on a regular basis. The studies enable the graduate to get acquainted with the subject matter required at work in the tourist, hospitality and recreational services sector, including the management of tourist enterprises (e.g. travel agencies, accommodation facilities). The graduate has extensive knowledge in this field, starting from basic concepts, through legal aspects, up to the principles of independentbusiness management.
The graduate has language skills in the field of tourism and recreation, in accordance with
the requirements set for the B2 level of the European System of Description of Language
Education; he/she can communicate with the environment in a foreign language, using professional (industry) vocabulary.
He/she can plan and organize work – individually and in a team. He/she is ready to think
and act in an entrepreneurial way, as well as to manage a team of subordinates, inspiring activities and taking responsibility for their outcomes.
The graduate is prepared to commence the second degree studies.
